Snow

Running home in the snow
You hold hands and shout to go faster
Your six year old legs are flying,
Cheeks pink from the joy and the cold.

Kid, you are a marvel.
Some said you’d never talk,
Now listen to your endless chatter!
Adding fractions out loud just for fun.

This listless January snowfall
Glistens pale in the gardens
Covers you in a light dusting
Flapping hands in the weak sun.

You softly tread in my footsteps
A robin sings on by its own
We’ll get lost in the snow! You call to me
We won’t – we’re nearly home.

We count out each house number
Until we get back to our door
You wriggle out of your mittens
And leave them, wet, on the floor.

How life turns back on itself
And now this is your world too
I still don’t understand people
But I know I understand you.
