The Prey

Echo, I said softly
To murmured vibration
Whispers, cold stares
But no-one answered back.

Echo, I called, echo
But no-one wants to know
Easier to stand back, not
Get drawn into the hunt.

Guilt, how it scatters
Like ashes from a fire
When it’s not your blaze that’s burning
Not your hands that made the spark.

My shouts grew ever louder
No-one listened, no-one cared
Until the fire burned others
Now impossible to hide.

Destruction, how it rages
Through the woodland, through the valleys
Why do they never answer
When a girl calls out her echo?
